Michigan title loan law at a glance

Michigan law doesn't allow car title loans as most states offer them. Lending in Michigan is overseen by the Michigan Department of Insurance and Financial Services (DIFS), Office of Consumer Finance. Here is what state law says, in brief.

License

None for a title-pawn-style product

Michigan does not have a standalone title-loan license, and the state's own Attorney General consumer alert describes the classic title-loan structure (lender takes possession of the title in exchange for quick cash) as not permitted

The law

Michigan's vehicle-title/lien framework is at MCL 257.233 et seq. (Certificate of Title Act), which requires liens to be recorded with the Secretary of State rather than held by physical title transfer.
